The Rise of the Precariat? Unemployment and Social Identity in a French Outer City
Drawing on ethnographic field research conducted in a French banlieue (outer city), this chapter considers recent claims made by intellectuals and other public commentators about the rise of a precariat (precarious proletariat). It asks how this term may obscure or conceal old and emergent inequalities.
