Effect of Chronic Risperidone Administration on Dopamine Type 2 Receptor Expression, Serotonin Type 2A Receptor Expression, and Anxiety Behavior in Fischer 344 and Sprague-Dawley Rats

Lana S. McDowell, Gettysburg College

Description

My goal was to investigate the effect of risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic, on a high-anxiety strain (Fischer 344) of rat as compared to a normal-anxiety strain (SD). The Fischer 344 exhibits behavioral characteristics that resemble some symptoms of autism, so I was curious about how they may be affected when treated with risperidone, the first FDA approved treatment for autism.
