Abstract
Philip S. Klein has been "doing history" for more than six decades. An Allentown native who grew up in Lancaster, studied at Franklin & Marshall College and the University of Pennsylvania, and taught for three decades at Penn State, Klein has been among the most zealous and productive advocates of Pennsylvania history. His energies, moreover, have frequently channeled through organizations devoted to the preservation of Pennsylvania documents and material culture, and to the dissemination of knowledge about the Keystone State. Klein is perhaps best known nationally for his authoritative biography of Pennsylvania's only President,James Buchanan. His synoptic history of Pennsylvania, co-authored with Ari Hoogenboom, continues to be read by thousands of high school and college students each year. [excerpt]
