Abstract

This essay is a review of the celebrations of the sesquicentennial celebration of the Chilean national independence, in the general context of the cold war and the specific effects of the 1960 earthquake (the biggest in recorded history of these natural phenomenon). The earthquake framed not not only a set of interpretative tools to read a national project against the role of natural 'disasters' in human, political and cultural history.
