Abstract

Lacayo presented a paper titled “A Haunting Ecology: Violence, Embodiment and Guatemalan History in La Llorona (The Weeping Woman, directed by Jayro Bustamante, 2019)” at the Annual Film-Philosophy Conference in Espinho, Portugal, July 1-4, 2024. The paper focused on the possibilities and challenges of placing the widely known Latin American folklore of “The Weeping Woman” into a film about the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-96) by arguing that the film La Llorona presents a double-embodiment of history and myth.
