MS-066: The Papers of George Saylor Warthen

This collection is the typed manuscript “A Study of the Rollaid” as well as the handwritten notes by Warthen. The majority of the collection is the manuscript, which consists of four chapters and an appendix. The notes are generally simple lists, mostly of other sources used by Warthen. These notes were for personal use and are for the most part check lists of other works or names.

The Papers of John W. Vannorsdall consist correspondence and issues proposals from the late 1960’s and early 1970’s from the Office of the Chaplain at Gettysburg College. The papers also include papers pertaining to the Chapel and the Student Christian Association during the same time period.

MS-070: Papers of Philip M. Biklé and Family

The papers of Philip Biklé consist of mostly personal correspondence between Biklé and Emma, and the correspondence of Emma and their children. Also included are class notes from Biklé’s years as a student, and account books from the Lutheran Quarterly and Pennsylvania College Monthly. This collection does not include any information on Biklé’s publications, the classes he taught, or his work as a professor and dean.

MS-085: Mary Dolheimer Collection of Women’s Commission Papers (1985- 2001)

The contents of the collection include reports, memos, minutes, agenda, budget reports, grant requests and other various miscellaneous materials from the Women’s Commission’s long tenure on campus. Included are the Climate Study of 1986 and the Reassessment that followed in 1990. Also included are minutes from subcommittees tasked with budget concerns, planning the annual Women’s Dinner or other current concerns of the Commission that year. A History of the Women’s Commission written by the summer intern Meredith Bowne during the summer of 1996 is included and is a good source on how to approach the collection as a whole.

MS-087: Phi Sigma Kappa, Rho Deuteron Chapter

This collection consists of many records relating to the Rho Deuteron Chapter of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity at Gettysburg College, as well as the group's original, local name, The Druids. It includes 20th century correspondence, manuals from the national office of PSK, copies of Oak Leaf, and Signet, and minutes and correspondence from various committees from the era of the group's transition from The Druids to Phi Sigma Kappa in the 1920s.

The collection consists of correspondence, official minutes and other organizational details reviewing the activities of the Interfraternity Council and Pan-Hellenic Council, the two student coordinating bodies for the fraternities and sororities at Gettysburg College, from the 1930s - 1980s.

This collection consists of the early Constitution of the Women’s Student Government Association, a Record Book containing minutes from the late 1940’s to early 1950’s, and some early correspondence. The remainder contains minutes from 1965 to 1971, with gaps in between, and documents pertaining to the activities and actions of the Women’s Student Government Council.
MS-092: Phi Kappa Psi, Pennsylvania Epsilon Chapter

This collection consists of the National Chapter publications, The Shield, and The Mystic Friend as well as the local PA Epsilon publication, The Torch. It also includes local chapter meeting minutes dating back to 1855, correspondence, registers, ledgers, and roll call lists of the local chapter.
MS-097: Robert B. Fortenbaugh Papers

Christine M. Ameduri

This collection consists mainly of material related to his professional careers as a Lutheran minister and professor of history. Other than the two photo/scrapbooks, there are few materials related to his personal and family life. One scrapbook contains mostly ephemera collected while a student at Gettysburg College, (1909 – 1913), and the second one contains material documenting his work as a minister in Syracuse, NY, between 1916 and 1920. Both scrapbooks contain numerous family and personal photos.

MS-107: Michael Jacobs Collection

The collection consists primarily of letters about the publishing, distribution, and sale of Michael Jacobs’ book Notes on the Rebel Invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania and the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 1863 (J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1864) from sales agents, his publisher, family members, and other individuals interested in the book. The letters date from September 22, 1863 – March 4, 1864. They were later transcribed with a typewriter and the transcriptions are included. Other items in the collection include lecture notes and other notes about the battle (partially transcribed), a photograph of Michael Jacobs, biographical information, testimonials and promotional materials about the book, and a later edition of the book (4th edition, revised, published by “Star and Sentinel” Printer, 1884).

MS-108: Louise Ramer ’29 Chi Omega Collection

This collection contains a number of different materials, including a scrapbook and photographs, newspaper clippings, letters, publications, and programs from both Tau Delta chapter and the national sorority. A majority of these materials are from the 1930’s and 1940’s, when Gamma Phi became Chi Omega. They focus on a number of events, including the installation banquet, a national conference, and an anniversary dinner, and many are associated with the Alumnae Chapter Ramer helped to establish in Gettysburg. Ramer was a national officer in Chi Omega at the time, and involved in planning a number of these events, and her scrapbook includes photographs, programs and menus from the Chi Omega National Convention in 1938. This collection would be useful to anyone interested in the history of Greek life on campus, the Chi Omega sisterhood, or how sororities operated in the early to mid 20th century.

MS-109: Dwight D. Eisenhower Appointment Books 1961-1967

This collection consists of copies of 1311 pages which cover the period from April 1961 to October 1967 during which time he occupied an office on the campus of Gettysburg College. These records detail his appointments, meetings, and telephone calls during his time at Gettysburg College.

This collection gives insight into the life of Thomas Yost Cooper and his parents, Dr. Moses and Mrs. Kate Miller Cooper. It says a great deal about Cooper’s personal interests, especially the Pennsylvania Dutch, writing, reading, movies, and Marlene Dietrich. The collection also demonstrates the work involved in writing for and editing a local newspaper.

MS-114: Elizabeth Peeling Lyon Collection

This collection consists primarily of 75 letters Betty wrote to her family during her two years at Gettysburg College. They date from September 18, 1950 through May 19, 1952, excluding the summer holiday. The letters chronicle Betty’s college activities, showing specifically her participation in band, choir, the Independent Women, Kappa Delta Rho (her brother’s fraternity), and dorm life. This collection also contains one scrapbook sheet of four photographs taken on campus and Lyon’s freshman name sign.

MS-115: The Notarangelo Collection of the Louis A. Parsons Papers

The collection was created from two different sets of letters and papers related to Louis A. Parsons, obtained from Thomas Notarangelo in 2008. Notarangelo purchased the papers at auction. Both sets consisted of correspondence of both professional and personal nature; one set consisting of correspondence from Parsons’ life before he became a professor at Gettysburg, and the other focusing mainly around the issue of his dismissal from Gettysburg College in 1925. The entire collection consists primarily of the correspondence written and received by Parsons.

MS-124: Samuel Simon Schmucker Bicentennial Celebration 1999

The official papers of the Schmucker Bicentennial Committee reside in the Archives at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. This collection at the college contains the material retained by Gettysburg College representatives to the committee and internal college documents relating to the program events compiled by the Public Relations Office and the Office of Planned Giving. Of special interest is a review of a research effort conducted within the Office of College Relations to identify the descendants of Samuel Schmucker in order to invite them to the college for the birthday event. This research resulted in the creation of a large family genealogical chart containing the names of 131 descendent of Schmucker. The collection contains correspondence with and personal histories of some of the living descendants.

MS-127: John B. Zinn Papers

Karen Dupell Drickamer

The collection consists mostly of correspondence with some publications and ephemera. The correspondence reflects Zinn’s close relationship with his graduates with whom he stayed in touch through much of their careers. The economic history of the country and the employment opportunities for college graduates is demonstrated in Zinn’s recommendations and correspondence with graduate schools and chemical companies from the twenties to the post-war era. As head of the department and as a member of the pre-med committee, Zinn worked hard to place all of his ‘boys’ in good positions or graduate school programs. The collection also contains departmental correspondence, some business records and a few files on the building of Breidenbaugh Hall in 1927 as well as lab remodeling in 1940.

It includes correspondence, primarily from students, former students and parents of students; a report of his administrative activities as director of a continuing education program attempted by the College in the mid-1950s; a review of the varied research and presentation interests of Mr. Darrah while a member of the faculty; and materials that preserves his legacy to his profession, to his interests in the history of photography, science and technology, and to Gettysburg College.
