For the most part, the collection represents Forness’ interest in architecture and architectural history as well as teaching Included is his research and writing on John Dempwolf, (a German architect from York, Pennsylvania who designed Glatfelter Hall, Brua Hall, and McKnight Hall) as well as other Pennsylvania architects and architecture in America. The collection also contains his files during the time he served on the Historical Architecture Review Board for the Borough of Gettysburg, 1988 through 2008. Also included are Forness’ course materials, lecture notes, examinations and grade book for his history courses at Gettysburg College.

MS-135: George Currier’s Notes on the Lectures Delivered at the Medical Department of Pennsylvania College at Philadelphia, 1849-1850

The collection consists of George Currier’s three manuscript books of lecture notes on anatomy, clinical work, surgery, case studies, obstetrics, diseases and treatment, herbs, tonics, narcotics, etc. Currier also drew detailed illustrations of sailing and steam ships interspersed among the pages as well as sketches of professors, soldiers, flags, etc.

MS-137: Medical Department of Pennsylvania College at Philadelphia Collection

This is an artificial collection of Medical Department catalogs and announcements obtained over time, as well as lists of faculty and alumni created by Samuel G. Hefelbower during his research for his 1932 history of the College. It contains Dr. William H. Gobrecht’s account of the history of the institution up to 1859. (This address can also be found in pamphlet form in our 19th Century Pamphlets collection.) It also includes print outs of PDFs of exchanges between faculty and former faculty of the Medical Department. The exchanges were over the dismissal of the majority of the faculty resulting lawsuit by Drs. Darrach and Wiltbank.

This collection represents an interesting variety of research materials in the area of theatre arts. The majority of the play books in Series I are from Owl & Nightingale productions directed by Emile Schmidt. Series II contains plays written by Emile Schmidt, and Series III consists of a costume sketch created by Emile Schmidt.

A large portion of the collection contains documents related to the management of the Pennsylvania German Society. It includes correspondence from fellow Directors, Committee Chairs, Society members, authors and researchers; as well as memos, minutes, and financial records from various Society committees. A portion of the Society- related papers include documents, pamphlets and sources relating to Society events, issues, and special interests.

Smaller portions of the collection have personal scrapbooks, photos, and postcards of Weiser's travels in Europe, the United States, and his time at Gettysburg College. Some others are related to the Lutheran church and early German immigrant culture.

MS-151: Dr. Edward F. Sipe ’26 Papers

This collection consists primarily of letters, photographs, and academic materials from Gettysburg College in 1922-1926, as well as miscellaneous memorabilia from that time and a small amount of alumni materials. The academic materials include textbooks and lab manuals, mostly from biology and chemistry courses, as well as class notes written by Sipe. While the letters were written during Sipe’s time as a student, they are almost entirely from female friends of Sipe, none of whom appear to have attended Gettysburg College. Most of the photographs are unidentified and lack any sort of date, with the exception of Sipe’s graduation photo and the undated photos of Penn Hall. There are course registration materials, as well as cards and invitations from various events, but with no real focus or theme uniting them. The collection provides some insight into the life of a student at Gettysburg College during the 1922-1926 period, particularly with regard to academics.

MS-152: Papers of Harold A. Dunkelberger ‘36

This collection includes materials relating to Harold A. Dunkelberger’s life and work in relation to Gettysburg College and the Lutheran Church, as well as his personal and family relationships. It contains notes and records used while he was a professor in and later head of the Religion Department, as well as information about aspects of College administration and alumni relations in which he was involved. Additionally, Gettysburg College publications for events with which Dunkelberger was not directly connected are present in the collection. Academic correspondence with faculty at Gettysburg and other institutions is included, as well as several pieces Dunkelberger reviewed prior to publication. Planning materials and minutes from a variety of conferences attended by Dunkelberger make up one series, as does memorabilia from the travels he undertook as part of his work.

MS-158: Gary T. Hawbaker Collection

This collection consists primarily of papers collected by Gary T. Hawbaker from his time as a prospective student up to his graduation from Gettysburg College in 1966. One particular area of strength in this collection is course materials. It includes papers, notes, and blue book exams for almost all of Hawbaker’s courses each semester and provides a snapshot of the history, education, and general curriculum of the early to mid-1960s. It is worth noting that while Hawbaker was a student, Gettysburg College’s fall semester extended into January and the spring semester extended into May. The rest of the collection contains materials pertaining to outside the classroom, some Hawbaker received from the College as a student, others as an alumnus. These materials range from letters, yearbooks, textbooks, photographs of events, programs from events, a bowling ball and bowling ball case, and jackets that carry the Gettysburg College emblem Together, this collection provides a complete look at what Hawbaker’s undergraduate career looked like.

MS-159: Robert Pomponio ’88 Theatre Arts Scrapbook

Robert Pomponio assembled this scrapbook while a student at Gettysburg College in the 1980’s. The scrapbook primarily focuses on the Owl & Nightingale Players production of “Happy End” by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, directed by Emile O. Schmidt in the spring of 1986. It includes production photographs taken by Pomponio, who was a member of the production crew, as well as captions and annotations provided by Pomponio. Also included in the scrapbook are photographs of campus events including performances by The Johnny White & Elite Band on November 1st, 1985, The DB’s in November 1985 and The Neats. Additional items in the scrapbook include photograph negatives for a trip to the Duke University Marine Lab September 28-29th 1986, a note written on February 14th, 1986 to Pomponio by classmate Susan Blume ‘87 regarding work he completed on a set, a program for the 91.1 WZBT radio station, a theatre arts program for scenes presented in Stevens Theatre on campus, the Prompter program for the production of “Happy End,” and a booklet including information for graduates May 14-15th 1988. This scrapbook and the commentary provided by Robert Pomponio provide a look into student life and popular culture of the 1980’s.

MS-163: The Gettysburg Experience, Class of 1963

The collection includes printed materials from college sponsored programs, college publications, scrapbooks, correspondence between a student and her family, textbooks from the required course GE 201-202: Literary Foundations of Western Culture, numerous documents and artifacts from Greek life, athletics, student life, and academic programs and activities. The collection presents a helpful overview of the academic program and student life at the college during the early 1960s, and follows the interaction of class members with the college as active alumni, highlighting their service to the college, honors and awards received, and activities during class reunions. Of special interest are legacy statements written by class members reflecting on their time at the college and how those experiences shaped their careers and lives after graduation.

This collection contains documents both formal (memoranda, minutes, reports) and informal (notes, emails) on the conception, design, and progress of the Science Center, along with blueprints, schematics, and other visual representations. It constitutes a first-generation view of the process by which the college created one of its most significant academic centers and pieces of architecture.

Though small and fragmentary, this collection contains important evidence dating from a crucial historical moment. It is particularly valuable to understanding how Gettysburg College responded to heightened pressures (from within and without) to diversify, engage, and reach across lines of race, economics, and social status.

Included are ephemeral announcements of program activities; inter-office memos; purchase receipts; correspondence between and from program members; questionnaires filled out by community children; and photographs taken at program activities.

The Daniel R. Gilbert Papers, aka Dan Gilbert’s Bookshelf, is a collection designed by Prof. Gilbert with the intention of documenting the development of his signature Organization and Management Studies (OMS) courses. Because book selection is crucial to the design of his courses, Gilbert requested that Special Collections and College Archives retain integral texts with this manuscript collection. The texts in combination with course syllabi and assignments encapsulate the course experience for Gilbert’s classes. This collection does not contain personal research conducted by Gilbert for his many publications. Hard copies of many of Gilbert’s publications are located in Glibert’s Vertical File in

The collection highlights Baskerville’s interest in Medieval and Renaissance literature. It includes offprints of some of his published works, fragments and drafts of other scholarly research, and notes that he may have used for some of his lectures. Of special note are copies of his M.A. and PhD. theses from Columbia and a three-page handout created by Baskerville for his Dante course (ca 1960-1969) with drawings by friend and colleague Ralph Donald Lindeman.

MS-224: Myers-Liebegott Papers

The Myers-Liebegott Papers is a small collection, but it contains some powerful photographs and documents. The information about the Gettysburg College trip to Harlem, contained in Series 3 is particularly interesting for capturing images and information of Harlem during the late 1960s and as documentation of the social activism of the Office of the Chaplain. Copies of Forty Acres and a Mule, published by students on the Educational Program of the New York Urban League are presumably connected to this trip.

Another interesting item in this collection is a 1948 letter written by a German woman, appealing to Charles E. Liebegott for financial or other assistance.

This collection contains the personal papers of Gordon A. Haaland, produced and acquired during his many years as a college professor and as an administrator at the University of New Hampshire, at the University of Maine at Orono, and at Gettysburg College. What is striking about the material is how Haaland remained true to his academic background in social psychology, remaining current in the field and applying the theories of that discipline to the tasks and challenges that he faced as a college administrator and educational leader. The collection is organized into four series: Series I: Pre-Gettysburg College; Series II: Gettysburg College; Series III: A President’s Library; and Series IV: Personal and Family

MS – 230: Young Men’s Christian Association of Pennsylvania College Papers, 1867-1872

In 1867, President H. L. Baugher appointed Tutor Henry Eyster Jacobs (Class of 62) to chair a student committee to draw up a constitution for an organization through which students could learn about and support Christian missions. March 16, 1867, the Young Men’s Christian Association of Pennsylvania College was formed with Edward S. Breidenbaugh (Class of 1868) as its first president. With an early membership of 40, the association meet monthly, then quickly moved to weekly programs including prayer meetings, bible study, and lectures. Over the years, they supported the work of the Y. M. C.A. of Pennsylvania, several foreign missions, conducted services in the local poorhouse, held public lectures, and worked for temperance The Y.M.C.A. was the precursor to the Student Christian Association that functioned on this campus until 1965 when it merged with the Chapel Council to become one body.

Chiefly an organization for inquiry concerning missions, the Y. M. C. A. of Pennsylvania College members wrote letters to foreign missionaries requesting details of mission work. Folder 1 contains letters from missionaries in Indian, Japan, Syria, Turkey, and China, as well as a “home missionary” in St. Louis, Missouri. Some respondents wrote of the importance of the work in general and a few wrote details of their personal missionary work.

The rest of the papers contain business correspondence with Executive Committee of the Y.M.C.A. of Pennsylvania and other Y.M.C.A. organizations, as well as letters from local ministers contacted to speak before the group. These records, 1867-1872, are the only extant records of the association until 1946-1965, For those papers, see Record Group 3.4 Office of the Chaplain, Series I: Student Christian Association.

MS-288: Creation and Preservation of Martin Puryear’s Sentinel

This collection includes records from Gettysburg College’s application process to the NEA, the selection process of the artist, images from the installation process of Sentinel, correspondence and an interview with Martin Puryear, newspaper cutouts of Sentinel’s reception. As well as records from Molly Hutton’s efforts to seek awareness and funding for the preservation and conservation of Sentinel in the early 2000s. Records from the application for an assessment award under Save Outdoor Sculpture! (SOS!), and a manuscript for a story on Sentinel to be featured in the GETTYSBURG alumni magazine are also included.
