Abstract
This paper briefly explores a small section of the Gettysburg Community in 1955, and focuses on the residential and business related life of York Street. With the life and work of Walter Lane, a local photographer, providing the lens to explore York Street, the community of 1955 York Street is uniquely highlighted through a hypothetical “week in the life” of the photographer. Walt Lane was the only professional photographer in Gettysburg at the time and therefore would have interacted with a multitude of business and residents through his work. His work included taking photos for the local high school, Gettysburg College, the Gettysburg Times, and more. Along with the many other exciting things happening during the summer of 1955 in Gettysburg, such as President Eisenhower visiting, this paper explores the role of both Walt Lane and York Street throughout this time.
